This file serves as a brief introduction to the HPE analysis programs.
The HPE analysis programs are a set of programs for engineering stress
analysis based on the finite element method. They have been designed to
operate effectively on microcomputers (IBM PC or compatible). The finite
element method is a general purpose engineering analysis tool applicable to a
wide range of problems such as static and dynamic stress analysis, heat transfer,
fluid flow and other field problems. Version 1.0 of the HPE analysis
programs are capable of static stress analysis of two and three dimensional
structures. Other applications will be addressed in later versions.
The present version of the Program includes the following element types: 2D & 3D
beams, 2D & 3D trusses, 2D plane stress/strain/axisymmetric solids, 3D solid, 3D
plate (membrane+bending), 2D & 3D spring elements, and 2D & 3D gap elements.
The gap elements permit the solution of non-linear contact problems. An iterative
Newton-Raphson solution procedure is also available for geometrically non-linear
problems. Coupled degrees-of-freedom may be specified. Boundary conditions
supported include specified displacements, nodal forces, element pressures,
temperature loadings, and initial element strains. The pre-processor features
arbitrary user-defined local coordinate systems (cartesian, cylindrical or
spherical) for generating model geometry, generation capabilities for nodes and
elements, 3-dimensional interactive model plotting with zoom, perspective, node
and element labels, boundary condition plotting and element shrink options. The
pre-processor can also generate an input file formatted for the ANSYS (a trademark
of Swanson Analysis Systems) finite element code. The pre-processor supports
models up to 2500 nodes and elements and provides restart capability for model
modification or dividing the model generation between multiple modelling sessions.
The pre-processor also includes a built-in database of all the required properties
of the standard rolled steel sections in the AISC Manual of Steel Construction.
This permits the user to fully define the beam element properties by simply spec-
ifying the section name (ie, W8X48). The analysis programs dynamically allocate
memory according to the exact requirements of the model being solved so there are
no definite limits on problem size in terms of nodes, elements, etc. but rather
an overall limit of approximately 400,000 bytes of working storage area. The programs
use a profile storage technique for efficient memory utilization.
The HPE analysis programs include an interactive menu-driven pre-processor
with graphics (CGA & EGA) for generating the analysis input data and
analysis programs for two and three dimensional stress analysis. An interactive
post-processor for displaying and manipulating the analysis results will be
available the fourth quarter of 1987.
The demonstration package for Version 1.0 consists of the pre-processor
(PREP.EXE), a database file of standard steel beam properties(AISCDBSE.78),
two and three dimensional analysis codes (HPE2D.EXE & HPE3D.EXE) and a
documentation file (HPE.DOC). For BBS distribution the files are packaged
in four archived files as shown below. All files are available for down-
loading from BBS's, or they may be ordered directly from HPE. The demo
programs are fully functional versions of the actual programs but allow only
limited size problems to be analyzed.

PROGRAM VERIFICATION
A series of verification problems have been run to determine the ability of the
Programs to give accurate solutions to intended applications. A set of verification
problem files are provided with the full versions of the modules to assist the user
in his or her own verification efforts. The Programs have been bench-marked against
both hand calculations from textbooks and results from other commercial finite element
programs. If, however, any problems are detected during the use of the Programs, please
notify HPE and we will attempt to correct the problem.
USER LICENSE AGREEMENT
USE AND COPYING
The HPE Analysis Programs are not copy-protected. The legal owner may make as
many back-up copies as he or she desires. The original distribution disks or a
back-up copy may be used to run the Programs, and the Programs may be used on
more than one machine as long as only one copy of the Programs is in use at any
one time. The Customer agrees to restrict the use and availability of the
programs to those persons who work at the address set forth in the Product
Registration. There are no restrictions placed on the use or distribution of
the demonstration versions of the Programs and their accompanying documentation.
DISCLAIMER OF WARRANTIES
The HPE Analysis Programs are provided on an "as-is" basis and HPE makes no
warranties whatsoever in respect to the Programs or documentation. HPE does
not warrant that the Programs will meet the Customer's requirements or that the
operation of the Programs will be error-free. The Customer is responsible for
determining the suitability and applicability of the Programs to the problem
being analyzed and the validation of the results obtained from the use of the
Programs. HPE does warrant the magnetic media on which the Programs are furnished
for a period of 90 days from the date of delivery indicated on the Product
Registration.
LIMITATION OF REMEDIES
Customer's sole and exclusive remedy for any loss or damage connected in any
way with the Programs or documentation shall be the replacement of the
Programs or documentation or return of any payment made by the Customer to
HPE. HPE will not be responsible, under any circumstances, for any special,
indirect or consequential damages such as, but not limited to, loss or injury
